Pet portrait from a photo

The single question people arrive with is whether their photo is good enough, and the answer is usually yes, with three exceptions. A photo taken from above, looking down at an animal on the floor, gives a foreshortened head and almost no body: nothing to build a portrait around. A backlit photo with a bright window behind turns your pet into a silhouette. And a photo where the face is blurred cannot be recovered, because the detail was never recorded in the first place.

Everything else is workable. Low light is fine. A messy background is fine, since the style replaces it anyway. A pet who will not sit still is fine, as long as one frame caught the face reasonably sharp. You do not need a good camera; a phone photo taken near a window in the afternoon beats a professional shot in bad light.

Two or three photos beat one. Not because the portrait is stitched from all of them, but because markings that only appear from one angle, a white sock, a patch behind an ear, a scar, get confirmed rather than guessed. If you only have one usable picture, pick the one where the head is straight on and the light is coming from the side.

The hardest case is a pet who has died, where there is no option to take another photo and the ones you have are whatever they are. Here the softer styles help: watercolour and plain oil forgive a soft or grainy source in a way that a sharp, high-detail treatment does not. A blurry photo becomes a loose painting rather than a bad reproduction, which is usually what people want anyway.
