Watercolour is the most forgiving of the painted styles, which is exactly why it suits animals. The medium works by letting pigment bloom and bleed into wet paper, so edges stay soft and nothing lands hard. On a dog or a cat that reads as fur: the outline of an ear dissolves into the background instead of being cut out of it, and the coat keeps its fluff rather than turning into a flat block of colour.

It is also the style that copes best with an imperfect photo. Because watercolour is meant to look loose, a slightly soft or badly lit source does not fight the result the way it would in a sharp oil painting. If the only decent picture you have of them is a phone snap from the sofa, this is the style to pick.

What it needs from you is light on the face. Watercolour has almost no shadow to hide behind, so a photo taken near a window beats one taken under a ceiling light. Avoid anything backlit. A pet in front of a bright window comes out as a shape rather than a face.

The palette stays deliberately pale. If your animal is white, cream or very light grey, expect a portrait that leans delicate and airy; if they are black or dark brindle, watercolour will lift them considerably lighter than they are in life. That is the honest trade-off of the medium, and it is the reason a lot of people choose oil for dark coats instead.

Every portrait below started as an ordinary phone photo. Nothing was staged, nothing was retouched first. Same animal, same pose, same collar — that is the whole point of it.
