Qwen Image vs Flux 2: the editing comparison

Alibaba's Qwen and Black Forest Labs' Flux 2 get compared constantly, usually as text-to-image models. This page does something narrower and more useful: it compares them at editing an existing photo, because that is how renza runs both of them in production: Qwen Image Max on its edit endpoint, Flux 2 Max on its own. We are being deliberate about that scope. renza does not run Qwen as a text-to-image model, so you will not find a "same prompt, blank canvas" gallery here — we are not going to stage a generation contest with outputs we never generated. Pick Flux 2 Max when…

✓The rest of the photo has to survive untouched. Flux 2 Max is the more conservative editor: it changes what you asked for and leaves the pixels around it closer to where they were.
✓Fine detail is in frame — fabric, hair, product edges, architectural lines. This is the axis where the extra credit is most obviously worth paying.
✓The result is going to be published or printed rather than iterated on again.
✓The edit is design work: adding a designed headline, laying type over an image, anything where kerning and letterform quality get looked at closely.

Is Qwen Image better than Flux 2?

For editing, not usually — Flux 2 Max preserves the untouched parts of a photo more faithfully and renders fine detail and designed type better. But Qwen Image Max costs 2 credits per edit against Flux 2 Max's 3, and on broad changes like relighting, background swaps or restyling a room the difference is small enough that the cheaper model is the sensible default while you are iterating.

Why does this page only compare editing?

Because that is the only comparison we can make first-hand. renza runs Qwen through its edit endpoint, not as a text-to-image model, so we have real Qwen edits to show you and no real Qwen text-to-image generations. Publishing a generation contest we did not run would be exactly the thing this page exists to avoid.

Which one is better at text inside images?

Both are unusually good at it, which is why they are both in the lineup. Qwen Image Max is the strongest text-in-image renderer among our budget models, and Flux 2 Max is the best typography engine we run overall. Do either of them need a mask?

No. Both are instruction-based: you upload the image, describe the change in plain language, and the model works out the region. There is no brush and no selection step, which is faster but means the wording of your instruction does the work a mask would have done.
