The rule with a funny portrait is that the painting has to keep a straight face. Comedy in this genre comes from the mismatch between a completely serious treatment and a ridiculous premise, so the moment the style starts winking too, the joke collapses. A dog painted with real gravity in an astronaut helmet is funny. A dog painted as a cartoon in an astronaut helmet is just a cartoon.

That is why the strongest results come from the most formal styles. Oil and renaissance treatments carry centuries of seriousness with them, and putting your animal inside that borrowed dignity does most of the comic work for you. The costume can be absurd as long as the brushwork is not.

Your pet's expression matters more than the costume. An animal caught looking mildly put-upon, or staring past the camera at something more interesting, is far funnier in a formal setting than one visibly having a good time. Pick the photo where they look unimpressed.

One practical warning: props sitting on the head, hats especially, are where these portraits most often go wrong, because the model has to invent how the object meets the fur. If the result looks glued on, try a photo where the ears are relaxed rather than pricked, which gives the hat somewhere to sit.
