How to bring old photos to life

Colourising a black and white photograph is inference, not recovery. The model knows what skin, grass, sky, wood and wool usually look like and applies that knowledge. It cannot know that your grandmother's coat was green, and when it guesses wrong the guess is confident.

Hand a model a small, soft, grainy image and it has to invent almost every detail in the face — and invented detail moves badly, sliding and shimmering as the clip plays.

Keeping it on the right side of uncanny
There is a line here and it is worth naming. A photograph that breathes feels like a memory becoming present. A photograph that grins, waves and swings its head around feels like a puppet, and the effect on a family member seeing it is the opposite of what you intended.
